Migraines, triggers and triptans.

Migraines, triggers and triptans.

Migraines, they're more than "just a headache." Most people don't know that a headache is actually a symptom of a migraine and it can range in longevity and severity. Other possible symptoms asides from a pounding headache are nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light, smell and sounds, neck stiffness, visual aura's, jaw tightening and weakness and numbness in your face.

Know your triggers.
There are several factors that are quite common and likely to trigger a migraine. These include:
- Stress
- Alcohol
- Lack of sleep
- Physical exertion, exhaustion
- Weather changes through barometric pressure
- Foods such as processed, salty, cheeses or additives such as aspartame and preservatives
- Dieting such as extreme fasting or skipping meals
- Bright lights, strong scents (perfumes, colognes, chemical scents, smokes etc.)
- Medications like vasodilators, such as nitroglycerin and some birth controls

The best way to learn about your triggers is to keep a migraine diary and document each time you experience an episode and what may have caused it that day. When you learn more about your triggers, it will help you move towards finding the right treatment for you.

Triptans for migraine treatment:
If you're learning more about your migraine symptoms and triggers and have experienced in some cases that OTC (over-the-counter) pain relief medications have not helped subside your symptoms, you can talk to your doctor about Triptans.

Triptans are drugs that come from the tryptamine family and are used as an abortive medication. Abortive medications stop a migraine at the onset, when you feel it coming or once it has begun. It works like serotonin, a brain chemical that assists in calming down an overactive pain nerve. These drugs cause primary vasoconstriction in the cranial blood vessels and helps stop excess blood flow which can set off migraine or headache pain.

Triptans have shown to help with headache pain, sensitivity to light and sound and other migraine symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. They come in tablet form which are taken orally, as well as a nasal spray or by injection.

It's important to talk to your doctor to see if triptans is the right fit for you. However, there are certain health conditions one could have that this drug would not be suitable for because they can narrow your arteries therefore it is best to talk to your doctor about the side effects and risks of these medications.
