How to manage your diabetes symptoms during the holidays

  • Be conscious of your snacks & meals: Traditional holiday meals are typically a time to indulge in celebratory foods such as ham, mashed potatoes, pie etc. basically they're high in carbohydrates, so it's best to be mindful of how much you consume and manage your portion control.   • Drink plenty of water: Drinking water before your meals and throughout the day could help with managing the amount of your food intake and make you feel more "full" while you're snacking and enjoying your holiday meals,
  • Monitor your alcohol use: Limit your alcohol intake to 1-2 drinks to avoid extreme low blood sugar levels. Be sure to also count your alcoholic beverages carbohydrate servings, as the carbohydrates in alcohol can add to the increase of your blood sugar. However the alcohol itself lowers your blood sugar within a 12 hour time span once it's consumed. This means you should check your glucose levels and be careful not to consume too much alcohol as it can negatively affect your count, especially if you are taking medications to assist in lowering your blood sugar as well.
  • Stay active: Move around. Plan some fun games and activities to get your bodies moving after your meal. This is also a great way to spend time and bond with your family and loved ones. Being physically active assists with any diabetes treatment plan, but before you start any physical activity check your blood sugar beforehand.
  • Don't forget your meds: Stick to your routine and treatment plan, however you can adjust your dose accordingly based on your glucose tests before, during and after your meals or before any activity you join in on this holiday.
  • Rest: Be sure to get some rest after the holidays. Celebrations can take an energetic toll on your physical body and lack of sufficient rest could actually increase your blood sugar levels.
