The Connection between Erectile dysfunction and COVID-19: Ways the virus could be effecting men's sexual health and more...

Erectile Dysfunction & COVID-19
If you’re familiar with ED, you’ll know that it is the medical term for “the inability for an erection to occur in order for men to have sexual intercourse”. Some refer it to “impotence”, although the term is less popular these days. There are many possible causes for ED such as cardiovascular disease, low testosterone, and hypertension to name a few. However, more recently with the ongoing and demanding COVID-19 news, social distancing and lockdowns in effect, it seems that COVID-19 could be added to the list of causes of erectile dysfunction.

Here are ways the virus could be effecting men’s sexual health and more:

Physical Health
While we know ED is typically a symptom of an underlying health issue, when faced with the challenges and restrictions of COVID-19, it has become extremely difficult for many to work towards improving their overall physical health. If you are able to, try to go for a walk or bike ride and get your body in motion as much as you can during the pandemic. It’s a great way to fight against ED and COVID-19 all at once as obesity and cardiovascular disease are risk factors working against the two. Home exercises are highly beneficial as well for your overall health and well being during this time.

Mental Health
One of the main causes of ED is stress and anxiety. With the negative effects of the pandemic, it is reasonable to link erectile dysfunction to it’s psychological impact. Life and relationships in itself could already be a factor in causes of stress and anxiety. With COVID-19’s cases, lockdowns and defiance’s, it could definitely be added to the stress equation. There are a few ways you can work to overcome the stress and anxieties during the pandemic to help with our erectile dysfunction symptoms:
1. Meditation - Although studies are newfangled and slow-moving the NIH posted back in October of 2018 a study in which there was a beneficial link between meditation (mindfulness) and ED with a conclusion of  "The current study suggests that a mindfulness group therapy framework offers a feasible and potentially promising treatment avenue for men with situational ED." Click the link to read the study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30297094/

2. Breathing exercises - At times stress and anxiety can become so overwhelming and interrupt your ability to take the proper amount of long, deep, slow breathes that your lungs require to increase the oxygen supply to your brain and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of calmness.

3. Communicate - Talk to someone. Communicate with your partner if you are having relationship issues and stresses linked with your erectile dysfunction. However, If your stress and anxiety is too much to bare that it's effecting more than your sex life and has become more relevant to COVID-19 and you feel as if you need a safe space to talk to   about your concerns of your mental well-being, contact your doctor or click the link to The CDC crisis resource page that provides a list of   information that can help: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/managing-stress-anxiety.html

Beyond The Physical and Mental Although physical and mental health do play very important factors in the contribution of ED, it may not be enough for some to fix the issue, as all that was discussed above are not of quick remedy. In this case, for a more accelerated course of action there are medicinal options to assist with the problem. Medications such as Cialis (tadalafil) and Viagra (sildenafil) are some of the most reputable prescription drugs that are known to work by increasing blood flow to the penis to help achieve an erection without difficulty. Talk to your doctor today if you are interested in this method of therapy to assist with your erectile dysfunction during the pandemic. Sexual intercourse is known to have its own health benefits such as helping with heart disease, relieves stress and assists with hormonal imbalances as per this article posted by WebMD back in 2013:https://www.webmd.com/sex-relationships/features/sex-and-health#:~:text=A good sex life is,sex more often may help.
