Tips on looking after yourself – Managing COVID-19 Stress

Take a break from the News.
Sometimes too much information on the subject of COVID-19 can be overwhelming and upsetting. Avoid information overload. Try to make an effort and “switch off.” This means shutting down your screens once in a while. This includes the television, phones, laptops and tablets. It can definitely benefit if you take a moment away from the media and give your mental health a break.

Take care of your body.
There goes a saying, “your body is a temple”, however in this case let’s look at our bodies as a self-healing home. Asides from staying away and keeping our distance, we can also take this time to stay healthy. This could look like meditating, doing limited to extensive exercises at home, eating a well-balanced meal and just taking long and deep breathes when you can. A little can go a long way as long as we remember to make time for self-care.

Make time to Unwind.
Need we say more? Use a few moments of your time a day to do something that you really enjoy. This could be anything from taking a nice hot bath, painting a scenic picture, to building a birdhouse out of everyday household items, or even attempting to bake that soufflé recipe you found in a magazine that's stuffed away somewhere in your kitchen cupboard. Whatever it is that sparks a little bit of joy within, give it a try!

Connect with Others.
It’s okay to feel a bit isolated during this time. If you do, please reach out to any friends, family or anyone that you trust and feel safe with to talk about any concerns or how you’re feeling. Connecting with people is probably the best thing to do right now, even if you're not holding a serious conversation and it's something as simple as “Hello, how are you doing today?” and just taking the time to check on others, could really help brighten up someone day and spread love, compassion and hope to all those around.

This situation is definitely hard on us all, but together we are stronger. Let’s stand as one and work to cope and diminish our COVID-19 stress united and help our community get through this together.
